Nutrioso
The small community of Nutrioso was founded in 1875. Surrounded with spectacular scenery, the town remains a small retirement, seasonal, and bedroom community.

When the snow at William's Valley melts, the cross-country skiing trails become outstanding mountain bike trails. Only 10 miles south of Nutrioso, this area is designated and especially designed for non-motorized recreation.

There are also several other great mountain biking areas at Hannagan's Meadow, Luna Lake, Terry Flat, and George's Lake.

 

Snowmobiling
Winter snow transforms the region's forest roads into a snowmobiler's paradise. Additionally, two of Arizona's best designated areas for snowmobiling are close to Nutrioso. Hannagan's Meadow, with miles of well-marked trails, is about 32 miles south of Nutrioso. Closer still — only 10 miles south of Nutrioso — is the Williams Valley area, which has a meadow specifically for snowmobiling, with trails branching off into more spectacular areas.

Skiing
Sunrise Ski resort is only 33 miles from Nutrioso. With 65 runs for skiers of all levels, there is something for everone. There is also a separate snowboarding area, groomed cross country ski trails, and even a children's area.

Additionally, the same two areas that host snowmobilers in the winter are Cross-country Skiing destinations. Williams Valley (10 miles from Nutrioso) has 19 km. of groomed trails, and Hannagan's Meadow (32 miles from Nutrioso) has 15 km. of groomed trails.

Lakes
There are more than a dozen lakes within 60 miles of Nutrioso. Here is a list of some of the more popular lakes in the area.

Luna Lake — 14 miles. Great for Rainbow, Brook, and Cutthroat Trout, and ice fishing in the winter.

Big Lake — 18 miles. Popular trout fishing lake, well stocked in the Spring. Many amenities make this lake a great destination.

Becker Lake — 20 miles. The oldest man-made lake in Arizona is known for large rainbow trout.

Crescent Lake — 22 miles. Known for brook and rainbow trout.

Lyman Lake — 36 miles. Waterskiing, power boating, fishing, and more.

Sunrise Lake — 41 miles. This 900 acre lake is one of the largest and best trout lakes in Arizona.

Escudilla Mountain
Just a few miles out of town is the entrance to Escudilla Wilderness Area. The relatively easy 3 mile walk to the lookout tower of Arizona's third highest mountain is such an outstanding trail that it has been given recognition by Congress as a National Recreational Trail. The scenery is magnificent, the surroundings are picturesque and the hike is relatively easy. The trail leads up the mountain through meadows, aspens, and fir and spruce trees to a 45 foot lookout tower Escudilla's summit is about half a mile north of the .
