Where is Nutrioso? |
Nutrioso is a small community in the White Mountains of Arizona. Settled in 1875, this town remains a small retirement, seasonal, and bedroom community. A map of the region is posted here. Nutrioso is on highway 180/191 south of Springerville and Eager, and north of Alpine. |

How do you pronounce Nutrioso? |
Nutrioso is pronounced "new-tree-oh-so." Local folklore says that the town was named for the wildlife in the area — the Beaver and the Bear. Settlers combined the Spanish words "nutria" and "oso" into Nutrioso. Unfortunately, they somehow used the wrong word for "beaver," which is actually "castor." In Spanish, a "nutria" is an otter. |
